Le origini: bambina sul trattore nei campi

Foundation

At Fattoria il Bell Casolino, we cherish nature's bounty and the timeless traditions that have shaped our family for generations. Our olive groves, with their ancient and wise trees, have stood proudly for over two centuries, passed down from father to son. My grandfather inherited them from his father, as his father did before him. It was in the quiet rhythm of farm life that my grandfather found peace after the turmoil of war. The land became his refuge — a place where the whisper of the leaves and the golden light over the fields soothed his soul. I still remember, as a two-year-old child, recognizing the deep rumble of his tractor long before I could see it. I would run to the terrace, heart pounding with excitement, to wave at my beloved grandfather as he returned with the tractor brimming with fresh fruit. Those scents, those flavors, and the warmth of those moments wove an unbreakable bond between me and nature. Life's path took me away for a time, but that bond never faded. Today, I am finally bringing to life the dream that has lived in my heart since childhood — to become a farmer, just like my grandfather. Those early moments planted more than memories — they planted a seed deep within me. Even as life carried me down roads far from the fields, the call of the earth never stopped whispering. The olive groves of my childhood were never just trees; they were living witnesses to our family’s history, guardians of stories passed from generation to generation. Now, I have returned to the same land that shaped my grandfather's peace, my family's roots, and my own heart. Here, every season feels like both a memory and a promise — a reminder that working the land is more than a job; it is an act of love, a way to honor those who came before, and a bridge to those who will come after.

Our journey began

Our journey began with a simple goal — to bring you the very best, straight from the earth. For us, that means more than just growing food; it means nurturing the soil, respecting the seasons, and letting nature set the pace. Organic farming and sustainable practices are not just methods, but promises we keep with every harvest. Every seed we plant carries a story, and every fruit we pick is a small celebration of that bond between land and hands. It is a journey that begins in the fields, under the open sky, and ends at your table — pure, honest, and full of life. When we decided to take over my grandfather’s olive groves, we were far from experts in agriculture. We knew the flora and fauna of our land, but farming was another world. How could we build a business that would sustain both us and the nature we love? The answer began with observation. We started to study everything that grew beneath the olive trees. Every wild plant was a mystery to solve, and for each one we spent hours researching and reading. We absorbed knowledge the way one savors bread, olive oil, and tomatoes — with hunger and joy. Until one day, Douglas and I looked at each other and said, in perfect unison: Medicinal and aromatic plants! Nature was already providing; we only needed to help her. And so we did — without pesticides or harmful treatments, for they would destroy the ecosystem we relied on. We needed the insects, the plants, every living ally we could find. After all, there were only two of us, and we were still “newbies” in this craft. Nature became our partner, our guide, and our teacher. The olive trees, however, told another story — one of neglect. Without my grandfather’s care, they had been left to fend for themselves. We could almost feel his tears in their gnarled bark, his efforts in every twisted branch. Bringing them back to life was not just a task, it was a promise: to honor his legacy and restore the grove to its former glory. Here, the wind carries the scent of herbs, the bees hum softly among the blossoms, and the sun paints the fields in shades of gold and green. It is in these moments that we are reminded of why we do what we do — because this land is alive, and it gives back when it is loved. Our farming is not just a craft, but a dialogue with the earth — a conversation that began generations ago and will continue long after us. Each day, we listen, we learn, and we grow alongside the very soil that sustains us.

Farming

We cultivate with sustainable practices, reducing unnecessary inputs and fostering biodiversity and living soils. Each variety we grow is carefully selected to thrive in our unique terroir, and every plot is monitored with precision, allowing us to intervene only when and where it is truly needed. We follow crop rotations and respect the natural rhythms of the land, knowing that time is one of the most powerful tools in agriculture. We minimize water and energy waste through careful planning and innovative techniques, ensuring that every drop and every watt is used with purpose. Our focus is always on the health of the soil — the hidden ecosystem beneath our feet — and on the well-being of the pollinators that make life possible above it. Healthy soils store carbon, hold water, and nourish life; thriving pollinators ensure the resilience of our harvests. The climate is changing, and we adapt in harmony with nature. Every choice we make — from the seeds we plant to the way we tend them — is guided by the belief that farming is not just about producing food, but about protecting the delicate balance that sustains it.

After moving from abroad to this family land — familiar in name, yet in many ways unknown — our business was not the only “child” born. In the very same year, we welcomed our firstborn into the world. With Douglas being a chef, we soon realized that with elegance and simplicity we could wean our little one on fresh food, harvested and prepared just for him. And then came the thought: why not do the same for others? We couldn’t use all the fruit just for ourselves, and yet the harvest was too small to sell to cooperatives or third parties. To avoid waste, we decided to create a small but fully functional processing laboratory on our property. Stainless steel and white washable panels — perfect. A prefabricated structure, ready to be transported, set in place, and… just like that, the chef was at work. As for me, I immediately volunteered — and self-appointed myself — as the official tester! How could I possibly resist the aromas drifting from that little kitchen, carrying the promise of something delicious in every breath?
